87 SURVEYS WERE RECEIVED IN RESPONSE TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: 

1.  Approximately how many round trip airplane flights do you make each year?
range:  1-30 = average 5 round trip flights a year 

2.  How difficult is it for you to understand flight attendant announcements?

"Almost impossible."
"Cannot hear a word!!"

"Voices are muffled."
"I skip them...hopeless."

"I once flew from St. Louis to New Orleans via Detroit because of that!"
"Don't hear at all on a plane."

3.  How difficult is it for you to understand pilot announcements?

6.  Have you tried using any hearing assistance systems on your airplane trips?  If so, what did you use and how effective was it? YES (23%)  NO (77%)

"Yes, but I do not always have it with me and 1/2 the time if I do they ask me not to use it!"
"T switch picks up hum."
"Cannot use hearing aids because of T coil interference."
"Tried T-coils and get a hum."
"I have a Comtek (FM system) but they say don't use it on airplanes."
"Yes, but it doesn't hook up directly."
"Telecoil picks up loud hum."
"Audex wired system bulky & heavy for flying."

7.  Would an effective hearing assistance system that is optimized for airplane use make you feel more comfortable and safer on your flights?

"Great idea.  Does it work with cochlear implants?"
"I think for safety of the passengers the sound systems should be improved."  "In an emergency I would have no idea of what was being said."
"Would like to see captioned films on planes someday."
"Thank you!  Do it!"
"Airlines should provide!"
"Need greatly!"
"Wonderful idea-less stressful!"
"Need to invent something for me to hear person next to me clearly from noise in airplane that airlines can make available, also for movies!"
"The fear of flying would be greatly reduced by being able to understand messages and less stressful."
"This would be wonderful!  And (will) help me to feel safer and informed."
"There would be so much less tension!"
"I believe that many people without a hearing loss also have difficulty."
